The main objectives of the projects are:

1. To improve the transport link between Guyana and Brazil in order to increase trade and promote greater cultural exchanges between the two countries;

2. to stimulate greater economic development of the 'hinterland' regions of Guyana and the State of Roaraima of Brazil, through improved access to the export markets of North and Central America and the Caribbean via Guyana's port facilities, and

3. to create a North-South transport link, which will provide a complete integration of the countries in the Guyana Shield Hub if complimented by an East-West transport link passing through Venezuela, Guyana, Surinam and French Guyana.

The Boa Vista - Georgetown interconnection is comprised of two distinct sections of roadway; (i) the Georgetown - Linden roadway, which is a paved and can accomodate traffic to international standards, and (ii) the Linden-Lethem Road, which is a gravel-surfaced road with numerous wooden bridges and a ferry-crossing over the Essequibo River at Kurupukari.

The solution required for the Linden-Lethem Road involves: the upgrading of the roadway to a paved surface, replacement of the wooden bridges with concrete and/or steel ones, and construction of a major bridge at Kurupukari.

The Governments of Guyana and Brazil have setup a Joint Working Group on infrastructure that is currently discussing the modalities for the financing of the Linden - Lethem road segment as well as a Deep Water Harbour at New Amsterdam and Hydro Electric Plants in the Upper and Middle Mazaruni, Guyana .  A joint report with concrete actions and decisions was completed June 2013 and submitted to the Heads of State of Brazil and Guyana.  Resulting from the recommendation of the Working Group, a Guyana/Brazil Joint Commission on Infrastructure has been setup to co-ordinate and bring to finality the Energy and Transportation projects being jointly pursued. Presently, the draft Terms od Reference for Detailed Engineering Study is being reviewed by Brazil while simultaneously multiple sources for the financing of the study is being pursued.

A new administration was elected to office in Guyana in May 2015. From all indications, the construction/upgrade of the Linden-Lethem Road is a major priority.  Currently the IADB is undertaking a new feasiblity study that examines the joint benefits of upgrading the Linden-Lethem Road and the development of a deep water harbour in Berbice.  That study will conclude by December 2016 and will provide the new Gov't with additional information for decision making.
