What is IIRSA?
|
The Initiative for the Integration of Regional Infrastructure in South America (IIRSA) is a dialogue forum among the South American countries. IIRSA seeks to promote the development of transport, energy and telecommunications infrastructure from a regional viewpoint, aimed at the physical integration of the twelve South American countries and the achievement of an equitable and sustainable territorial development pattern.

Background
The Initiative was adopted at a Meeting of South American Presidents held in the city of Brasilia, Brazil, in August 2000, at which the region’s leaders agreed to take joint actions to promote South American political, social and economic integration that includes the streamlining of regional infrastructure and specific measures to foster the integration and development of isolated sub-regions.

The Achivements of IIRSA 2006-2010
The strategic objectives of IIRSA for 2006-2010 are focused on four action areas: (i) Ensure the Implementation of the projects of the Implementation Agenda based on Consensus; (ii) Work towards making a qualitative leap in the territorial Planning process and the decision-making process related to investments in South American integration infrastructure; (iii) Capitalize the Initiative’s actions and experience gained in Integration Sectoral Processes to support integration infrastructure-specific projects; and (iv) Strengthen the Outreach strategy of the Initiative.
