Physical Integration and Development

The IIRSA Initiative promotes the identification of basic principles to encourage the region’s sustained economic growth, considering that physical integration is a necessary condition for development, whose sustainability is linked to significant transformations in other four key dimensions: competitiveness, social quality, environmental quality and institutional quality.

A Strategic Vision for the Physical Integration of the Region
Discussing this issue is a valuable contribution to the joint discussion and development of a shared Strategic Vision for the physical integration of South America. This will act as a guide as well as a force for convergence and synergy for the actions undertaken by governments and regional organizations towards the development of our peoples within a South American integration framework. We understand that discussing and developing a South American Strategic Vision is a recently initiated process, which lies mainly in the hands of authorities representing our countries. Therefore, a discussion and consultation process will be fostered so as to encourage the participation of national, regional and local governments, social organizations, and private sector’s representatives, thus creating an environment that should include different and divergent opinions with the purpose of building a common platform from which to forge our future.

Why does the South American physical integration need a strategic vision?
Since the end of the eighties, South American countries have undergone a deep process of economic and political structural reforms to gain macroeconomic stability and resume the path of growth and prosperity required to eradicate poverty from our societies. These efforts have given rise to new ideas and roles in the private and public spheres, and and a great deal of progress has been made at the institutional level, with regard to the strengthening of democracy and a new approach to integration. However, there are still key issues that undermine our populations’ well-being, dispel the hopes of a better future, and force us to reflect upon our ideas of development and our strategies to attain that goal.
